The 411 on General Dentistry

doctor-563429_640Dentists who practice general dentistry provide primary dental care for patients of all ages. They are in charge of the overall dental health of a patient. They are the ones who have the responsibility for diagnosing, treating, and coordinating services to meet all of their patients’ oral health needs. If a patient needs a specialized dental procedure, the general dentist will work with the specialist to ensure the patient gets the care they need.

Of the roughly 143,000 dentists that practice in Canada and the United States, the majority of them are general dentists. They may be partners or associates with other dentists. Some own their own practice. Other dentists work in higher education in colleges and universities, corporations, government health services, and the military.

What Type of Procedures are Done by General Dentists?

Some general dentists are very educated and experienced and have skills in almost all dental procedures. Here are some of the services they can provide:

How Much Education Does a General Dentist Have?

General dentists are all required to have a college degree, with at least three years of undergraduate courses, usually with a strong foundation in the sciences. After that, they must have four years of dental school. Upon graduation from dental school, they must take an exam to secure a license in the state in which they wish to practice.

What Is The Difference Between A DMD and DDS?

Both a DMD and a DDS have the same education levels and the same requirements as far as curriculum in college. DDS stands for a Doctor of Dental Surgery. DMD stands for a Doctor of Dental Medicine. So the only real difference is a single letter.

Is Your Dentist A Member Of The AGD?

The Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) is an organization that is dedicated to continued education on the part of its members, and a source of reliable consumer information. In selecting a good dentist for you or your family, a good place to start is finding out if they are a member in good standing of the AGD. This demonstrates commitment to the dental health of all of their patients.

Members of the organization are always learning new and better ways to do their job, and it helps them in staying up to date on some of the latest in dental procedures. This helps ensure quality treatment. If you are not sure if your dentist is a member of the AGD, find out. If they are not, you may need to search for another dentist who is a member.
